Why ask at all

Budget lodging varies more from one property to the next than higher-priced hotels do. Listings are sometimes short or out of date, and a low nightly rate can hide extra charges or limits. A few well-chosen questions, sent by email or asked by phone, can save money and avoid a bad night. Save the answers in writing, because a reply you can show at check-in is worth more than a verbal promise.

This list works for hostels, motels and inns alike, and not every question will apply to every property. It does not point to any particular business, and policies change, so ask for current information.

Price and fees

  1. What is the total price for my dates? Ask for the final amount including taxes and all mandatory fees, not only the nightly rate. The point of a comparison is the total stay price.
  2. Are there extra charges? Common ones include cleaning, linen or towel rental, key deposits, parking, pet fees, resort fees and charges for extra guests.
  3. Is a deposit or card hold taken at check-in? Ask how much, in what form and when it is returned. Card holds can tie up part of your credit limit for days.
  4. Which payment methods are accepted? Small properties sometimes prefer cash or take cards only with a fee.
  5. Is there a charge for booking changes? This ties into reservation changes if your plans may shift.

Cancellation and booking terms

  1. What is the cancellation policy, and what is the deadline? Look for the free cancellation windows and the penalty after them.
  2. Is the rate refundable or non-refundable? The cheapest rate is often the least flexible.
  3. What happens if I arrive late or miss the first night? Some properties cancel the entire booking.
  4. Will I get a written confirmation? Keep the booking confirmation with the name, dates, rate and room type.

Room and bed details

  1. What exactly am I booking? For a hostel, ask whether it is a bed in a dorm or a private room, how many beds are in the dorm and whether it is mixed or single-gender. For a motel or inn, ask about bed size and number of guests.
  2. What bedding is included? Ask about sheets, blankets, pillows and towels. Ask about mattress age and condition if sleep matters a great deal to you, since bedding comfort is hard to judge from photos.
  3. Is the bathroom private or shared? Ask how many people share it.
  4. Is there heating, cooling and hot water? Ask whether they work all day and night.
  5. Is there a window that opens, or an exterior door? This affects ventilation and security.

Noise and surroundings

  1. What is near the room? Ask about bars, roads, trains, ice machines, laundry areas, kitchens or common rooms. Noisy rooms are one of the most frequent complaints at budget properties.
  2. Are there quiet hours, and are they enforced?
  3. Can I request a quieter room? Rooms at the back or on a higher floor may be calmer. Say what matters most when you reserve.
  4. What does the neighborhood feel like at night? Staff may give a candid answer, and you can compare it with guest reviews.

Access, arrival and departure

  1. What are the check-in and check-out times? Ask about the check-in times and whether early arrival or late checkout is possible, for a fee or at no cost.
  2. Is the front desk open around the clock? If not, ask how late arrivals work.
  3. Can I store luggage before check-in or after check-out? That helps if your transport leaves at a different hour.
  4. How do I get in? Ask about key cards, codes or physical keys, and whether there is a charge for a lost key.
  5. Is there an elevator, and are there stairs to the room? If you or a companion have mobility needs, ask for specifics, such as step-free access, door widths and bathroom layout.
  6. Where do I park, and what does it cost? Ask about size limits and whether the lot is lit and monitored.

Safety and security

  1. How is the property secured? Ask about door locks, lighting, key-card access and whether there are cameras in common areas.
  2. Is there a safe or locker for valuables? For a hostel, ask about locker size and whether you need your own lock.
  3. What are the fire and emergency arrangements? It is reasonable to ask where the emergency exits are and whether smoke alarms are in each room.

Food, kitchens and extras

  1. Is breakfast included, and what does it consist of? Hotel breakfast at budget places ranges from nothing to a simple spread.
  2. Is there a kitchen or microwave I can use? Ask what equipment is there and whether you need to bring your own utensils.
  3. Are Wi-Fi, laundry or luggage services available, and do they cost extra?

Rules that can catch you out

  1. Are there age rules or restrictions on guests? Some hostels limit age ranges or children, and some properties limit visitors.
  2. What is the pet policy? Ask about fees and size limits if relevant.
  3. Is smoking allowed anywhere on the property? Ask about smoking and vaping rules in rooms and balconies.

How to use the answers

Compare the answers across two or three properties instead of judging one in isolation. A slightly higher price that includes bedding, parking and a flexible cancellation option is often better value than the cheapest listing with add-ons. If a property will not answer basic questions, or the answers keep changing, treat that as useful information. Finally, check that the property, not a third party, confirms any promises you rely on, and keep the replies until your stay is over.
