Search results for a family trip can run to hundreds of properties, and the photos all look cheerful. The trick is to search in a sensible order so you narrow the field quickly and then ask the right questions. This guide is about the process of searching, not about specific hotels, which this site does not rank or recommend.

Step 1: Set the basics

Before you search, settle your dates, the number and ages of travelers, and your total budget. Enter all the guests in the search tool, including children with their ages, because rates, room options and policies often depend on them. Searching with the wrong numbers can show rooms you cannot actually use.

Step 2: Filter by room layout

Use the filters or the room descriptions to find a layout that fits. Typical choices include family rooms, suites, connecting rooms and apartments. Pay attention to the bed types listed. A sofa bed, rollaway or crib might technically count as sleeping space but may not be comfortable for the whole stay. If you want a kitchen, filter for kitchenette suites or serviced apartments.

Step 3: Check the map

Put your key sights on the map: the attraction, the beach, the museum, the relatives you are visiting. Then see how far each candidate is. Consider the realistic journey with children: walking speed, stroller access, stairs and the time of day. A sight that is “ten minutes” by car may feel much longer with traffic and a car seat to manage.

Step 4: Check kid-friendly facilities

Look for facilities that match your family’s needs.

  • Pools with shallow areas, and rules for supervision.
  • Play areas, gardens or games rooms.
  • Laundry facilities.
  • Kids’ menus and flexible meal times.
  • An elevator or step-free access for strollers.

The facilities should help your particular children. A waterslide is attractive to a seven-year-old but irrelevant to an infant.

Step 5: Shortlist by total cost

For the two to four finalists, work out the cost of the entire stay. Add taxes, resort fees, parking fees, breakfast and the extra charge for additional guests or beds. Free breakfast for children can be a valuable saver, but policies vary by property.

Step 6: Read recent guest comments

Search the comments for words that matter to parents: noise, crib, stroller, pool, clean, family, small, thin walls. Notice recurring points. Take photos with caution, as wide-angle shots can make rooms look larger.

Step 7: Ask the hotel these questions

A short message or call can save a lot of trouble. Ask:

  1. Can you guarantee connecting rooms or a particular floor, or only note the request?
  2. Do you provide a crib or cot, and is there a fee?
  3. What is the maximum occupancy of this room type, and are there extra charges for children?
  4. What are the pool hours and rules for children?
  5. Is there a fridge or microwave, and what are the breakfast hours?
  6. How do cancellation and date changes work?
  7. Is there a grocery store or pharmacy within walking distance?
  8. Are there any construction works or events planned that may cause noise?

Written answers are better than verbal ones, so keep the email or message.

Step 8: Book with flexibility

Family plans change when someone gets sick or a flight shifts. Where the price difference is modest, a flexible rate gives you room. Read the fine print about deposits and refunds, and note the cancellation deadline.

Details and policies change, so verify everything directly with the property before you travel.
